Angela Carter

Angela Carter (1940–1992) was an English novelist and short-story writer celebrated for her richly stylized, feminist reworkings of myth and fairy tale. Born in Eastbourne and raised largely in South Yorkshire, she studied English at the University of Bristol and began her writing career in the 1960s, developing a voice defined by gothic imagery, dark eroticism, and sharp irony.

Her defining achievement is the 1979 collection The Bloody Chamber, which reimagines classic tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, Puss-in-Boots, and Beauty and the Beast — stripping away their sanitized morals to expose the violence, desire, and power struggles beneath. Carter had earlier translated Charles Perrault's fairy tales, and her deep familiarity with their structures allowed her to subvert them with striking precision, giving voice and agency to female protagonists long cast as passive.

Beyond The Bloody Chamber, Carter wrote novels including Nights at the Circus and Wise Children, blending magical realism with feminist and postmodern concerns. Her influence extends well beyond literature: her fairy-tale revisions have inspired countless artists, musicians, and filmmakers, and her work remains a cornerstone of feminist gothic fiction, admired for its linguistic richness and fearless reimagining of inherited narratives.
