William Golding

William Golding was an English novelist, poet, and playwright, born in 1911 in Cornwall, England, and educated at Oxford, where he studied English literature. Before turning to writing full time, he worked as a schoolteacher, an experience that gave him close insight into the behavior of boys, and he served in the Royal Navy during World War II, an ordeal that shaped his dark view of human nature and civilization.

Golding is known above all for Lord of the Flies, published in 1954 after numerous rejections. The novel follows a group of boys stranded on a deserted island whose descent into savagery becomes a parable about the fragility of civilized order and the darkness latent in human beings. Its stark, controlled prose and allegorical structure made it a staple of school curricula and one of the most widely read English-language novels of the twentieth century, later adapted into audio and musical settings such as the chapter-by-chapter song cycle that renders its scenes, including «Fire on the Mountain» and «Castle Rock».

Golding went on to write further novels exploring similar themes of moral ambiguity and the primal undercurrents beneath social order, and in 1983 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his body of work. He remains one of the defining British writers of the postwar period.
