Warsan Shire

Warsan Shire is a Somali-British poet and writer, born in Kenya to Somali parents and raised in London from the age of one. Her poetry explores displacement, migration, womanhood, trauma, and inherited memory, often drawing on her family's experience of leaving Somalia. She gained wide critical recognition for the poem «For women who are difficult to love», which circulated widely online and established her distinctive, intimate voice.

Shire published two early collections, «Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth» and «Her Blue Body», before reaching a global audience through her collaboration with Beyoncé. She adapted several of her poems for the visual album «Lemonade», with her words narrated throughout the film, bringing her writing on Black womanhood and generational pain to millions of new readers.

She was named Young Poet Laureate of London and has received awards including the African Poetry Prize. Her work is known for its emotional directness and unflinching engagement with themes of exile, the body, and survival, positioning her as one of the most influential diasporic poets of her generation.
