About the artist

Tennessee Williams, born Thomas Lanier Williams III in 1911 in Columbus, Mississippi, was one of the most influential American playwrights of the twentieth century. Raised partly in St. Louis by a domineering father and a fragile, genteel mother who inspired several of his female characters, Williams channeled a difficult childhood and his own struggles as a gay man in a hostile era into intensely personal, poetic drama. He is closely associated with the Southern Gothic tradition, blending lyrical language with themes of desire, decay, mental fragility, and the collapse of old Southern gentility.

Williams spent years in relative obscurity before The Glass Menagerie brought him acclaim in 1944. He followed it with A Streetcar Named Desire, whose vivid, unflinching portrait of Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski became a landmark of American theater and won him a Pulitzer Prize. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof brought him a second Pulitzer and further cemented his reputation for exploring repression, illusion, and raw human need on stage.

His plays were frequently adapted into acclaimed films, extending his reach far beyond the theater and shaping how mid-century American anxieties around sexuality, family, and class were portrayed on screen. Williams remains a defining voice of American drama, admired for prose that reads almost like verse and characters whose vulnerability still resonates.
