Ted Hughes
About the artist
Ted Hughes was an English poet widely regarded as one of the most significant British writers of the twentieth century, serving as Poet Laureate from 1984 until his death in 1998. His debut collection, «The Hawk in the Rain» (1957), announced a voice preoccupied with the raw power of nature — animals, violence, instinct — rendered through dense, muscular language and revived or experimental verse forms. Poems like «The Jaguar», «Hawk Roosting», and «Wind» became touchstones of postwar English poetry for their unflinching, almost mythic vision of the natural world set against human frailty.
Hughes's life was marked by deep personal tragedy. His marriage to the American poet Sylvia Plath, herself among the century's most celebrated writers, ended with her suicide in 1963; his subsequent partner, Assia Wevill, died by suicide in 1969, taking their young daughter's life as well. Hughes rarely spoke publicly about these events, and the controversy surrounding them shadowed his reputation for decades, even as his poetic achievements continued to grow.
His later work, including collections built around figures like Crow, extended his mythological and often unsettling exploration of nature and psyche. He found lasting personal stability in his second marriage, to Carol Orchard, in 1970. Hughes's «Birthday Letters» (1998), published shortly before his death, finally addressed his relationship with Plath directly, becoming one of the most talked-about poetry collections of its era.
