Simon Armitage

Simon Armitage is a contemporary English poet born in 1963 in Marsden, West Yorkshire, a place and dialect that continue to shape his work's tone and settings. Before turning fully to writing, he trained in geography and psychology and worked as a probation officer, an experience that fed the frank, socially grounded observation running through much of his poetry. He became one of the most widely read British poets of his generation, known for a colloquial, plainspoken style laced with dry Yorkshire wit and an ear for the rhythms of everyday speech.

His poems, including «Remains», «The Manhunt» and «Mother, any distance greater than a single span», frequently take ordinary, sometimes brutal, subject matter — soldiers, damaged relationships, working-class life — and render it with striking clarity and emotional precision. Alongside original poetry, Armitage is known for acclaimed modern translations of medieval works such as «Sir Gawain and the Green Knight» and «The Death of King Arthur», bringing historic English verse to new readers without losing its music.

Armitage has also worked extensively in broadcasting and teaching creative writing, and in 2019 he was appointed Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom, succeeding Carol Ann Duffy.
