Serial Podcast

Serial is a nonfiction podcast created by Sarah Koenig and Julie Snyder, spun off from the public radio program This American Life and launched in 2014. Its first season follows one continuous story across eight episodes rather than a new topic each week, a format that was novel for podcasting at the time and helped popularize the medium as a vehicle for long-form investigative storytelling.

Season one reinvestigates the 1999 murder of Baltimore high school student Hae Min Lee and the conviction of her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed, largely on the testimony of his friend Jay. Koenig spent over a year combing through trial transcripts, police files, and interviews, presenting the case in a way that left listeners uncertain of Syed's guilt or innocence rather than delivering a verdict.

The show became a cultural phenomenon, reaching record download numbers for a podcast at the time and spawning countless spin-off discussions, fan investigations, and follow-up journalism. It is widely credited with kickstarting the true-crime podcast boom and demonstrating that serialized audio journalism could draw a mass audience.
