About the artist

Seamus Heaney (1939–2013) was an Irish poet, playwright and translator, widely regarded as one of the most significant poets in the English language of the twentieth century. Born on a farm in Castledawson, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, he studied at Queen’s University Belfast before working as a teacher and lecturer, later becoming a full-time writer. His poetry is deeply rooted in the rural landscape and agricultural labor of his upbringing, rendered with precise, sensory language that grounds abstract themes in physical detail.

His debut collection, «Death of a Naturalist» (1966), established his reputation with poems like the title piece and «Follower», exploring childhood, land and family through closely observed imagery. Subsequent collections, including «North» (1975) — which addressed the violence of the Troubles through poems such as «Punishment» — «Station Island» (1984) and «The Spirit Level» (1996), broadened his scope to history, politics and myth while retaining his grounding in the natural world, as seen in later works like «Seeing Things» and «District and Circle».

Heaney was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1995 for work of lyrical beauty and ethical depth that exalts everyday miracles and the living past. He also held professorships at Harvard and Oxford, and his acclaimed translation of «Beowulf» brought his poetic sensibility to a classic Old English text, cementing his legacy as both a major poet and a vital literary bridge between tradition and contemporary voice.
