Malcolm X

Malcolm X (born Malcolm Little, later known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz) was an African American Muslim minister and human rights activist who became one of the most influential and controversial figures of the American civil rights era. Rising to national prominence as a spokesman for the Nation of Islam, he championed Black self-determination, self-defense, and pride, offering a sharper, more confrontational counterpoint to the era's dominant nonviolent integrationist movement. His speeches, delivered with formidable oratorical skill, dissected racism, colonialism, and the psychological effects of oppression on Black Americans, addressing themes reflected in titles like «Who Taught You to Hate Yourself?» and «The House Negro and the Field Negro».

After breaking with the Nation of Islam and undertaking a pilgrimage to Mecca, his views evolved toward a more internationalist, pan-Africanist human rights framework, seeking alliances across racial and religious lines while still insisting on liberation «by any means necessary». He founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity to pursue this broader vision before his assassination in 1965.

Though not a musician, Malcolm X's speeches and recorded addresses have had a profound influence on hip-hop and spoken-word culture, frequently sampled and referenced by rap artists for their rhythmic intensity and uncompromising political content. His words continue to circulate as spoken-word tracks and samples, treated by listeners and archivists alike as foundational texts of Black radical thought and American oratory.
