Langston Hughes

Langston Hughes was an American poet, novelist, and essayist, and one of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance. Born in Joplin, Missouri, he became known for pioneering jazz poetry, a style that captured the rhythms and improvisational feel of jazz and blues music within verse. Influenced by Paul Laurence Dunbar and Walt Whitman, he published his first poetry collection, The Weary Blues, in 1926.

Unlike many of his Harlem Renaissance peers, Hughes chose to celebrate the everyday joy, humor, and music of Black American life rather than focus solely on suffering and hardship, without ever losing sight of injustice. Poems like «Harlem», «Mother to Son», «I, Too», and «Let America Be America Again» remain widely read and studied for their directness, musicality, and social conscience. His novel Not Without Laughter won the Harmon Gold Medal for Literature.

Hughes wrote across many forms — poetry, fiction, essays, and plays — and read his work to audiences across the country over decades, becoming one of the most publicly beloved American poets of his era. He died in 1965, but his influence on American literature, civil rights writing, and the tradition of merging music with poetry continues to resonate.
