Joseph Conrad

Joseph Conrad (1857–1924) was a Polish-born British writer widely regarded as one of the greatest novelists in the English language, a remarkable feat given that English was his third language after Polish and French. Born in the Russian-controlled part of Poland, he spent years as a merchant marine sailor before settling in England and turning to fiction, drawing heavily on his seafaring experiences and travels to places like the Congo and Southeast Asia.

His most celebrated work, «Heart of Darkness», is a novella recounting a journey up the Congo River that became a foundational text for exploring colonialism, imperialism, and the darker recesses of human nature; it later inspired Francis Ford Coppola's film Apocalypse Now. Other major works include «Lord Jim», «Nostromo», «The Secret Agent», and «Under Western Eyes», which showcase his dense, morally complex prose and recurring themes of isolation, fate, and the fragility of civilization.

Conrad's influence extends far beyond literature into film, philosophy, and postcolonial studies, where his depictions of empire remain both celebrated and critically scrutinized. His narrative techniques, including unreliable narrators and nonlinear structure, shaped modernist fiction and continue to be studied as essential to the development of the 20th-century novel.
