About the artist

José María Heredia y Heredia was a Cuban poet, widely considered one of the founding voices of Spanish American Romanticism and one of the most important literary figures of Cuba's early nineteenth century. Born in Santiago de Cuba, he spent much of his adult life in exile, principally in the United States and Mexico, after being implicated in conspiracies against Spanish colonial rule — a biography of political displacement that deeply shaped the themes of longing, nature, and freedom running through his poetry.

His best-known work, «En una Tempestad», is a celebrated ode inspired by a hurricane he witnessed, blending vivid natural imagery with a sense of awe and philosophical reflection that became a touchstone of Latin American Romantic poetry. Heredia's verse combined neoclassical formal discipline with an emerging Romantic sensibility, making him a transitional figure between eighteenth-century models and the Romantic movement that would flourish across the Spanish-speaking world in the decades after his death.

Heredia's poetry is still studied throughout the Spanish-speaking world as an early and influential expression of Cuban national identity and Romantic aesthetics, and he is often cited alongside the first great poets of Spanish American literature.
