John Agard

John Agard is a poet, playwright and children's author born in 1949 in British Guiana (now Guyana). He moved to the United Kingdom in the late 1970s, where he became a prominent figure in bringing Caribbean voices and Creole language into British literary and educational life. Alongside performing his own work at readings, he has long worked to introduce Caribbean poetry to schools and wider audiences.

Agard's poetry is known for its playful, rhythmic use of language, sharp wit, and directness in addressing themes of race, identity and colonial history. His most widely known poem, «Half-Caste», is a pointed critique of racial terminology and attitudes and has become a staple of the British school curriculum, studied by GCSE students for its performative energy and its challenge to fixed ideas of identity. Other notable works, such as «Checking Out Me History» and «Listen Mr. Oxford Don», continue this engagement with history, language and power from a Caribbean perspective.

Throughout his career, Agard has consistently written in his own Caribbean Creole voice, using it deliberately to assert the value and legitimacy of Caribbean speech within English-language literature. His work bridges oral performance and written poetry, and he remains one of the most widely studied Caribbean-British poets in UK education.
