Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
About the artist
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) was a German poet, novelist, playwright, and statesman, widely regarded as the single most influential figure in German literature. Born in Frankfurt am Main, he rose to early fame with the novel «Die Leiden des jungen Werthers» (The Sorrows of Young Werther) before settling in Weimar, where he served in government and helped shape what became known as Weimar Classicism alongside Friedrich Schiller.
Goethe's masterwork is «Faust», a two-part dramatic poem exploring themes of ambition, temptation, and redemption through the story of a scholar who bargains with the devil, Mephistopheles. Scenes such as «Studierzimmer», «Auerbachs Keller in Leipzig», and «Walpurgisnacht» remain among the most quoted and studied passages in German literature, blending philosophical depth with folk imagery and dramatic intensity. Beyond drama, his lyric poetry - ranging from youthful Sturm und Drang verse to the reflective West-östlicher Divan - established forms and themes that later poets and composers drew upon extensively.
Goethe's influence extends far beyond literature: his scientific writings on morphology and color theory, his voluminous correspondence, and his role as a public intellectual made him a central figure of German cultural life. Composers including Schubert, Beethoven, and Schumann set his poems to music, and his ideas echo through the philosophy of Hegel, Nietzsche, and Freud, cementing his place as a foundational figure of European letters.
