J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling, born Joanne Rowling on 31 July 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, is the author of the Harry Potter series, one of the best-selling and most culturally influential works of fiction ever published. Writing under the pen name J.K. Rowling (adding the initial K, for Kathleen, after her paternal grandmother, partly out of concern that a female name might deter young readers), she conceived the idea for the story of a young wizard attending a school of magic in 1990, while working as a researcher and secretary.

After years of hardship, including divorce and financial struggle, she completed Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which was rejected by numerous publishers before being accepted by Bloomsbury and published in 1997. The book launched a seven-part series that concluded in 2007, becoming a global phenomenon spawning a hugely successful film franchise, stage productions, and an enormous body of adapted and fan-created audio content, including chapter readings and character-based material.
