James Berry
About the artist
James Berry (1924–2017) was a Jamaican-born poet and writer who moved to England, where he became a leading voice in Caribbean-British literature. Drawn to writing from a young age despite limited resources in his hometown, he worked by day to fund his studies and gradually built a body of poetry and fiction that gave voice to the West Indian experience in Britain.
His work explores his Jamaican roots and the realities of the Windrush generation and its descendants in England, capturing both the injustices they faced and the generosity and solidarity within their communities. Poems such as «Dreaming Black Boy», «My Father», and «On an Afternoon Train from Purley to Victoria, 1955» reflect his direct, image-rich style and his attentiveness to everyday migrant life.
Berry received significant recognition for his contributions to literature, including the Smarties Prize for children's fiction, the Signal Poetry Award, and the Cholmondeley Award, and was appointed OBE in 1990 for services to poetry. His work remains an important record of the Caribbean diaspora's presence and influence in postwar Britain.
