About the artist

J. B. Priestley (1894–1984) was an English novelist, playwright, and broadcaster from Bradford, Yorkshire, an industrial city whose class tensions shaped much of his work. He became one of Britain's most widely read literary and social commentators of the twentieth century, known for combining accessible storytelling with sharp moral and political argument. His wartime radio broadcasts made him one of the most recognisable voices in Britain, second in popularity only to Churchill during the early years of World War II.

Priestley is best remembered today for his play «An Inspector Calls», a tightly constructed drama in which a mysterious inspector interrogates a prosperous family about their responsibility for a young woman's death. Written in 1945 but set in 1912, the play uses its pre-war setting to expose the hypocrisies of Edwardian capitalism and to argue for collective social responsibility, themes central to Priestley's own socialist convictions. Its structure, moving through the family members one by one, has made it a staple of school curricula and a frequently revived work on the British stage.

Beyond «An Inspector Calls», Priestley wrote extensively across genres, including the novel «The Good Companions», essays, and other stage plays exploring time and consciousness. His body of work reflects a consistent concern with fairness, community, and the gap between public respectability and private conduct, ideas that gave his writing lasting relevance well beyond his own lifetime.
