About the artist

Grace Nichols is a Guyanese-British poet, born in Georgetown, Guyana, in 1950 and raised on its coast before moving to the United Kingdom in 1977. Her work grows out of the Caribbean oral storytelling tradition, drawing on folk tale, rural landscape and the history of slavery, especially as it bore on women's lives. She writes in a register that moves fluidly between Guyanese Creole and standard English, a blend that gives her lines their distinctive rhythm and directness.

She became known in Britain alongside poets such as Linton Kwesi Johnson and John Agard (her long-time partner) as part of a generation of West Indian writers who addressed racial tension and immigration during the Thatcher years. Her 1984 collection «The Fat Black Woman's Poems» introduced a heroine who is witty, sensual and unapologetic, confronting stereotypes with humour rather than anger. Poems such as «Island Man» and «Praise Song for My Mother» explore migration, memory and matrilineal inheritance, while «Hurricane Hits England» links a Caribbean storm to English soil, insisting that «the earth is the earth is the earth».

Nichols has published extensively for both adults and children, and her poems are widely taught in British schools. Her work is valued for its sensory precision, its reclaiming of Black womanhood, and its insistence that Caribbean and British identities are not opposites but part of one continuous, living history.
