George Orwell

George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, an English writer and journalist best known for two landmark works of political fiction: «Animal Farm» and «Nineteen Eighty-Four». Both books grew out of his deep disillusionment with totalitarianism, particularly the corruption of the Soviet Union's revolutionary ideals under Stalin, and remain among the most widely read and referenced works of twentieth-century literature.

«Animal Farm» is a satirical fable in which farm animals overthrow their human owner only to fall under the rule of pigs who recreate the very tyranny they rebelled against. «Nineteen Eighty-Four» imagines a totalitarian superstate ruled through surveillance, propaganda, and the manipulation of truth, giving the world enduring terms like Big Brother, doublethink, and thoughtcrime. Together the books established Orwell as the defining voice of dystopian political fiction.

Orwell's plain, direct prose style and his insistence on political honesty in writing influenced generations of authors and journalists. His warnings about authoritarianism, propaganda, and the erosion of language and truth continue to be invoked in political and cultural debates well beyond his own lifetime.
