Flannery O'Connor

Flannery O'Connor was an American writer of short stories and novels, celebrated as one of the great voices of Southern Gothic literature. Born and raised in Georgia, she wrote fiction steeped in the rural American South, shaped by her devout Roman Catholic faith and marked by violent, often grotesque events that expose the spiritual condition of her characters. Her most famous story, «A Good Man Is Hard to Find», exemplifies her method of using shocking, sometimes darkly comic violence as a vehicle for moments of grace or moral reckoning.

O'Connor published two novels, «Wise Blood» and «The Violent Bear It Away», along with story collections including «A Good Man Is Hard to Find and Other Stories» and the posthumous «Everything That Rises Must Converge». Her characters — con men, backwoods preachers, self-satisfied matriarchs, misfits — inhabit a South rendered with sharp comic observation and unflinching moral seriousness, blending humor, horror and religious concern in a style entirely her own.

Diagnosed with lupus in her mid-twenties, O'Connor lived much of her adult life on her family's farm in Georgia, writing prolifically despite declining health until her death in 1964. Though her body of work is relatively small, her influence on American short fiction has been immense, and her stories remain widely read, taught and adapted for stage, radio and audio recordings.
