About the artist

Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961) was an American author and journalist widely regarded as one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. Born in Oak Park, Illinois, he served as an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I, an experience that left lasting physical and psychological scars and shaped much of his later fiction. He became associated with the group of expatriate writers in 1920s Paris later known as the Lost Generation, developing a spare, understated prose style built on short declarative sentences and deliberate omission — an approach often called the Iceberg Theory.

His short fiction, including «Hills Like White Elephants», «A Clean, Well-Lighted Place», «Soldier's Home», and «The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber», distilled his style into its purest form, favoring implication and dialogue over explicit exposition to convey grief, isolation, and quiet endurance. These stories, alongside his novels, established a voice that influenced generations of writers who followed.

Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954 in recognition of his mastery of narrative craft. Despite his literary success, he struggled for years with depression and alcoholism, and died by suicide in Ketchum, Idaho, on July 2, 1961. His work remains a cornerstone of modern literary style and continues to be studied and read worldwide.
