Edmund Spenser

Edmund Spenser was an English poet of the Elizabethan era, celebrated as one of the greatest and most influential figures in the history of English poetry. He is best known for «The Faerie Queene», an unfinished allegorical epic in praise of Queen Elizabeth I, written in the distinctive nine-line stanza form he invented, later named the Spenserian stanza in his honor.

His language deliberately evokes an archaic, Middle English feel while remaining pronounceable as Elizabethan English, a stylistic choice that set him apart from contemporaries and shaped his reputation as a self-conscious craftsman of the English literary tradition. Beyond «The Faerie Queene», he produced the sonnet sequence «Amoretti», chronicling his courtship of his wife, alongside pastoral and occasional verse such as «The Shepheardes Calender».

Spenser's technical innovations and thematic ambition influenced generations of poets who followed, from Milton to Keats and Shelley, and he was honored with burial in Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey after his death in 1599, cementing his status as a foundational figure of English verse.
