Dylan Thomas

Dylan Thomas (1914–1953) was a Welsh poet born in Swansea, widely regarded as one of the most important British poets of the 20th century. He never belonged to a formal literary school, but his work absorbed elements of Modernism and Romanticism while remaining unmistakably his own: dense, surreal imagery held inside tightly controlled forms, driven by intense musicality and raw emotional force. His writing rewards listening as much as reading, and much of his lasting fame rests on his gift for sound — alliteration, rhythm, and incantatory repetition.

His most celebrated poem, «Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night», written as a villanelle addressed to his dying father, remains one of the most quoted poems in the English language for its defiant stance against death. Other major works include «Fern Hill», a lyrical meditation on childhood and lost innocence, «And Death Shall Have No Dominion», and «A Child's Christmas in Wales», a warm prose memoir that became a holiday classic. Beyond poetry, Thomas was a broadcaster and dramatist; his radio play «Under Milk Wood», completed in 1954, depicting a day in the life of a fictional Welsh fishing village, is considered a landmark of British radio drama.

Thomas's life was marked by heavy drinking, financial instability, and a turbulent marriage to Caitlin Macnamara. He died in New York in November 1953 at age 39, from complications linked to pneumonia and liver disease, cutting short a career whose influence on poets and readers has only grown since.
