About the artist

Chinua Achebe was a Nigerian novelist, poet and essayist widely regarded as one of the most important African writers of the twentieth century, often called the father of modern African literature. Born in the village of Ogidi in eastern Nigeria, he grew up at the crossroads of Igbo tradition and British colonial missionary influence, an experience that shaped the central themes of his work: the collision between indigenous African societies and European colonialism.

His 1958 novel «Things Fall Apart» became one of the most widely read works of African literature, translated into dozens of languages and adopted as a school text around the world; it portrays the disintegration of a traditional Igbo community under the pressure of colonial rule and Christian missionary expansion. He went on to write further novels, including «Anthills of the Savannah», as well as short stories, poetry and influential essays, notably his critique of racial representation in Joseph Conrad's «Heart of Darkness».

Beyond fiction, Achebe worked in Nigerian radio broadcasting before the Biafran War, during which he represented Biafra on diplomatic missions, and later held academic posts including a professorship at Brown University. His writing and criticism reshaped how African literature was read and taught, and he remains a foundational figure whose influence extends across generations of African and postcolonial writers.
