Charles Bukowski

Charles Bukowski (1920–1994) was a German-born American poet and novelist who spent most of his life in Los Angeles. Raised in a difficult household and scarred by severe acne as a teenager, he began writing early but grew disillusioned with the literary establishment, spending much of his twenties and thirties drifting through menial jobs and heavy drinking that would become central material for his work.

His writing is defined by a stripped-down, unadorned style that channels the tradition of American realism into gritty, often confrontational first-person narratives about poverty, alcoholism, sex, work and the margins of society. Poems and stories like «Bluebird» and «The Genius of the Crowd» display the mix of vulnerability and hard-edged cynicism that made his voice instantly recognizable, and his alter ego Henry Chinaski became a recurring figure across his prose.

After years of obscurity, a deal with Black Sparrow Press allowed him to write full-time, resulting in dozens of poetry collections and novels including «Post Office» and «Ham on Rye». His work remains divisive — dismissed by some critics as crude and misogynistic, celebrated by others as an unvarnished chronicle of working-class and outsider life — but his influence on confessional and underground American poetry is widely acknowledged.
