Carol Rumens

Carol Rumens is a British poet and academic, born on 10 December 1944 in Forest Hill, south London. She studied philosophy at London University before turning fully to writing, and her career has combined poetry with teaching and literary residencies across the UK and abroad, including posts in Belfast, Cork, Canterbury, and Stockholm. She currently holds a professorship in creative writing at the University of Hull.

Her poetry is known for its formal control combined with political and historical engagement, often drawing on her experiences living in Northern Ireland during the Troubles and her fascination with Eastern Europe and Russia, reflected in collections such as The Greening of the Snow Beach, inspired by a visit to Moscow. Poems like «Émigrée» explore displacement, memory, and the idea of homeland from a distance, themes that recur throughout her body of work.

Rumens has published numerous collections since her 1973 debut A Strange Girl in Bright Colours, including Unplayed Music, Star Whisper, Direct Dialling, From Berlin to Heaven, and Holding Pattern, the latter shortlisted for a Belfast Arts Award. Beyond poetry, she has written for the stage and worked extensively as a critic and reviewer, and remains a widely anthologized and studied voice in contemporary British poetry.
