About the artist

Anne Frank was a Jewish diarist whose writing has become one of the most widely read personal accounts of the Holocaust. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, she moved with her family to Amsterdam in 1933 after the Nazi rise to power. Following the German occupation of the Netherlands, the Frank family went into hiding in 1942 in a concealed annex above her father's business premises.

During more than two years in hiding, Anne kept a diary addressed to an imagined friend she called Kitty, documenting daily life in confinement alongside reflections on adolescence, identity, family relationships, and hope amid fear. The entries, later published as The Diary of a Young Girl, are prized for their emotional honesty and literary maturity despite her young age.

The annex was discovered in August 1944, and Anne died in a concentration camp shortly before the end of the war. Her diary, preserved and published by her father after the war, remains a defining testimony of the Holocaust and a staple of literature taught worldwide.
