Anne Bradstreet

Anne Bradstreet was a poet of Puritan New England, widely regarded as the first published poet of the British American colonies and the first woman to have a volume of poetry published from the New World. Born in England, she emigrated with her family to Massachusetts in the early seventeenth century as part of the Puritan settlement.

Her poetry, later collected in works such as The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America, combines devotional and domestic themes with reflections on family, faith, mortality, and daily colonial life, as seen in pieces like «To my Dear and Loving Husband» and «Here follow some verses upon the burning of our house». Her voice is intimate and personal for its era, blending Puritan religious conviction with tender depictions of marriage and motherhood.

Bradstreet is now recognized as a foundational figure in American literature, studied for both her historical significance as a pioneering female writer and the enduring emotional clarity of her verse.
