Amiri Baraka

Amiri Baraka, born Everett LeRoi Jones in 1934 in Newark, New Jersey, and known earlier as LeRoi Jones, was an American poet, playwright, essayist, and political activist who became one of the most influential and controversial figures of the Black Arts Movement. His early work moved through Beat and Bohemian circles in Greenwich Village before he shifted decisively toward Black nationalist and later Marxist politics, changing his name and founding institutions to promote Black cultural and political consciousness.

Baraka's poetry is marked by its raw, confrontational energy, its roots in jazz rhythm and vernacular speech, and its unflinching engagement with race, power, and American history. Works such as «Black Art», «Preface to a Twenty Volume Suicide Note», and «Somebody Blew Up America» exemplify his fusion of poetic form with direct political statement, while his play «Dutchman» remains a landmark of postwar American theater.

As a foundational figure of the Black Arts Movement, Baraka influenced generations of poets, musicians, and spoken-word artists, and his work continues to be read as a touchstone for politically engaged Black literature in the United States.
