Adrienne Rich

Adrienne Rich, born May 26, 1929, in Baltimore, Maryland, was one of the most influential American poets and essayists of the twentieth century, whose work traced a decades-long arc from formally controlled early verse to some of the most searching feminist and political poetry in the language. She studied at Radcliffe College, and her first collection, A Change of World, was selected by W. H. Auden for the Yale Series of Younger Poets while she was still a student — an early sign of the technical assurance that marked her work even before her politics fully emerged.

Over the following decades Rich’s poetry grew increasingly direct and unflinching, engaging with questions of gender, sexuality, motherhood, power, and language itself. Diving into the Wreck, a collection exploring themes of self-discovery and the wreckage of inherited myths about womanhood, won the National Book Award and remains one of her signature works. Twenty-One Love Poems broke ground for its open treatment of lesbian love, while essays such as Notes Toward a Politics of Location extended her feminist and political thinking into prose, insisting that identity and perspective are always situated in a body, a place, and a history.

Rich was also a committed public intellectual, engaging with civil rights, anti-war movements, and lesbian feminism throughout her life, and she famously declined the National Medal of Arts in protest of government policy. Her insistence that the personal, political, and poetic are inseparable made her a foundational figure for generations of feminist writers, and poems like Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers and Trying to Talk with a Man remain widely read for their clarity and quiet ferocity.
