Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865) was the 16th President of the United States, serving from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Born in a log cabin in Kentucky and raised largely in Indiana and Illinois, he rose from a self-educated frontier lawyer to become one of the most consequential figures in American history. He led the nation through the Civil War, its greatest constitutional, military, and moral crisis, and worked to preserve the Union while ultimately ending slavery.

Lincoln is remembered above all as a masterful orator and writer, whose speeches and public papers remain foundational texts of American political rhetoric. «The Gettysburg Address», delivered in 1863, redefined the war as a struggle for human equality in a few spare, powerful sentences. His «Emancipation Proclamation» declared enslaved people in Confederate states free, reshaping the purpose of the war, while his inaugural addresses articulated a vision of national reconciliation and moral reckoning.

Beyond the battlefield and the ballot box, Lincoln's legacy rests on the clarity and humanity of his written and spoken word. His documents are studied not only as history but as literature, admired for their economy, cadence, and moral seriousness. He was assassinated in April 1865, days after the war's end, and remains one of the most widely quoted and studied American leaders.
